AboutAn action painter, I am interested in the process of art rather than the product, the journey rather than the arrival, the questions rather than the answers. I have no map, no prescribed plan -- no pre-views of coming attractions; only my intuition and knowledge of the abstract elements of art (line, shape, color, gesture, tension, composition) to lead me. Line is my strong suit. I begin with line. Like a writer, I like to see where the painting takes me rather than imposing my idea from the beginning. As I move, pushing and pulling, I always check the composition: Is it balanced without being static? Are the elements talking to one another? Is there tension? When I get stuck, I always go back to line. Do I make mistakes? Yes. If the final composition doesn't hold together, I have to scratch everything and start all over again. Can I touch up just one part of the painting? No. It either works or it doesn't. It's a whole, an entire gesture: one action, one stroke, fresh from my mind-eye-hand, as if it were made right there on the spot. | |
